FLOATING POINTS

The Manchester born, London based producer/dj/composer Sam Shepherd aka Floating Points has quickly become one of the most respected and sought-after musicians in contemporary music. Also as a DJ, Sheperd has gone on to establish himself as one the forerunners of today’s new dance music movement, earning the respect of his peers and contemporaries such as Theo Parrish, Kyle Hall, Benji B & many more.

HUNEE

Every DJ would like to think themselves a real musical connoisseur, but Hunee really is – it’s not him that says so, but pretty much anyone else whenever the man born Hun Choi pops up in conversation. As likely to draw for a classic house record as he is a disco curveball, a boogie delight or mixing an African bomb into a techno record, each selection he makes is a thing of true passion – you can see it not only in his eyes, but so too in the eyes of those dancing along.

TERRENCE DIXON (live, as POPULATION ONE)

First live show in the Netherlands ever, first time in Europe since 15 years… The Population One track ‘Rush Hour’ inspired RH’s company name, we can’t express how honored the Amsterdam institution feels to have him on the bill during this year’s weekender, at Shelter. Terrence Dixon debuted in 1994 on Claude Young’s Utensil label with a pair of 12″ releases under his own name and an album, Unknown Black Shapes, as Population One. Under the Population One codename, the Detroit citizen has realised some of his most vivid, esoteric portals to the Motor City mindset.

JORDAN GCZ (live)

One half of the much loved improvisation specialist duo Juju & Jordash and one third of Magic Mountain High – when Jordan GCZ flies solo he takes things to a whole new level. Originally from the US, GCZ has resided in Amsterdam for some years now with one foot in the local scene and the other firmly in his studio. Releasing his most recent output via local institution ‘Rush Hour’, ‘Future Times’ as well as his own ‘Off Minor’ imprint, Jordan’s productions capture the spirit of Detroit along with his own signature musicality and energy.

LOVEFINGERS

DJ, producer, promoter, label and A&R manager — Andrew “Lovefingers” Hogge has worn practically every hat there is to wear in the underground dance music industry over the past two decades. If one thing has driven Lovefingers’ myriad endeavors since the beginning, it’s the love of sharing music — pure and simple. An unwavering passion for crate digging and a penchant for the esoteric, have seen him emerge as a revered selector and tastemaker among discerning international listeners. Andrew brings the same deft curatorial hand to DJing as he does to his esteemed ESP Institute imprint, a global touchstone for genre-bending experimental dance fare.

KAMMA

Born and raised in Amsterdam, Kamma’s path to her craft could not have come more naturally. A child to parents who both have DJ’d professionally for over 25 years, Kamma was brought up on jazz, funk, disco and early house. Her instinctive nature and open-mindedness make her a purveyor of a wide range of sounds, going deep beyond her traditional roots. With an effortless contrast of energy and emotions, she journeys dancers into complex rhythms, dreamy waves and new era electronics.

MARGIE

Music runs deep in the veins of Margie, also known as Mijke Hurkx. For as long as she could count bars, Margie has been collecting and writing about music. The music lover extraordinaire collects boogie, house to whatever floats her boat. In Margie’s world without genre borders, there’s simply good or bad music. No doubt she feels right at home at Amsterdam’s versatile Rush Hour, where she runs the House of Music fanzine and plays DJ to RH’s label nights.

DREAMCAST

Dreamcast is a super soulful young singer and producer out of Washington, D.C. At the moment, he’s got a handful of tracks out (a few of which were released on the D.C.-based independent and funk-focused label PPU), on which his gentle, straightforward croon can be heard hovering over funky bass guitar lines and two-step friendly drums.

MARK GRUSANE

Former co-owner of Mr Peabody Records in Chicago, DJ Mark Grusane has a strong history and knowledge of DJing and Dancefloor culture while being an important go-to-guy for selections amongst a vast pool of international DJ’s, Compilers, and Record Labels. Just a little research will instantly show you his influence on DJ Culture, Record Collecting & Digging.

INTERSTELLAR FUNK

What marks out Interstellar Funk’s productions and DJ sets is van Elden’s love of the imperfections and eccentricities associated with left-of-centre analogue machine music. You’ll hear them within the new wave, electro, techno, jack-tracks, heavy electronics and everything in between that populate his DJ sets, as well as the solo records he’s released

SASSY J

Sassy J is a DJ, music lover, promoter and handcraft artist based in Bern, Switzerland. She has been pooling global sounds through her own night, Patchwork, for the last 10 years – doing it strictly for the love of music – by curating line-ups (from Sadar Bahar to MF Doom to Theo Parrish), or through her selections as a DJ.

RELMER INTERNATIONAL

Relmer International really tries to create a journey through house, balearic, italo and back in his sets as well his productions. He is an upcoming Amsterdam-based DJ, producer and new kid on the block ,who alsoproduces atmospheric house with a keen eye for the dancefloor.

SEKAN

Characterized by a broad musical taste and deep knowledge of various genres, Sekan attracts a wide range of music lovers. By his family he was exposed to Indonesian music at a young age, which still has a major influence on his current approach to sounds.
This eventually resulted in the start of his own platform Jiwa Jiwa. What originally started as a music label, has evolved into a multidimensional platform where photography, articles and films are expressed with the binding factor music.

Tracklist
1. Klein & MBO – The MBO Theme
2. Warrior – The MBO Theme

“The MBO Theme” (1983) has been a dance floor favorite since decades, created by Mario Boncaldo and Tony Carrasco – the legendary Italian/US duo Klein & MBO. The track got support in NYC and Chicago by greats as Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles and Ron Hardy.

The rare version on the flip is created by a South-African band called Warrior. Rush Hour explain how they came across the track: “We bumped into this version on a South African record digging trip. It took us a few months to realize the scarcity of this version. Ian Osrin, a well respected engineer in South-Africa who was involved in many 80ties and 90ties Bubblegum, Kwaito and South African disco records, explained us about music distribution in South Africa during apartheid. Because the country was culturally banned at the time, a lot of releases weren’t imported or exported. Even when a track was huge, like “The Klein & MBO Theme”. So South African musicians would create their own versions which were sold locally.

We got in contact with Tony Carrasco from Klein & MBO. He also hadn’t heard Warrior’s version before, but he liked it as much as we do!”

Ben UFOAs one of the co-founders of Hessle Audio, Ben UFO has been responsible, alongside Pearson Sound and Pangaea, for some of the most varied and ground breaking releases of recent years.

He remains one of the few DJs in the UK to have made an impact without a production career to fall back on, and as such his reputation is solely the result of his skill as a selector and as a mixer. As a result he remains in a position to fully explore sounds both old and new, across the worlds of house and garage, dubstep and grime, and further into the past. This level of commitment to the dance music of the last two decades has led to a collection of records which reflects the position London has long held as a city responsible for the constant development of forward thinking music.

Antal

Antal needs little introduction here. As a DJ and ‘musicologist’, there are few more serious than Antal. Trying to sum up the musical world of the Rush Hour founder with a few loose signifiers like house or techno would be futile.

Gonno

Part of Japan’s next house / techno generation and Rainbow Disco Club resident! Gonno’s renowned for his single “Acdise # 2″ released on International Feel Recordings, that got support from François Kevorkian among others. Check out the recording of his Boiler Room set in London to get a taste!

Masalo

With his roots hailing from Japan, the Dutch-based artist Masalo is considered part of the new wave of Amsterdam music creatives. His musical outcomes offer multiple perspectives of his universe, combining a love for cosmic and soulful dance music with a raw Amsterdam aesthetic. Masalo’s mixes are proof of this mentality, unearthing organic music and combining them with records that could be seen as modern-day successors of the original dance music.

Sisi

Sisi has been actively involved in many areas of music culture; working with DJ Pige and Ryo Murakami to establish Pan Records A&R and as a booking manager at SECOBAR that has played a big role in the development of underground youth culture in Shibuya, Tokyo.

As he was moving through his music career, the depth of his soul and his impulsive attraction to dance music led him to the unique mixed music of disco, world music and house.

5-track preview

Mutant Beat Dance has returned with their debut self-titled 25 track album, a record album booklet consisting of 6 records in 3 different formats of 12″s, 7″s and 10”, a CD and in digital formats.
This concept has been in development since 2015 with over two hours running time.

The debut album from renegade trio Mutant Beat Dance  (Traxx aka Melvin Oliphant, Beau Wanzer and Steve Summers) takes the wild and free sound of Chicago’s Music Box era into the 21st Century. Over twenty-five tracks the album mines an oft cited but rarely understood ground at the intersection of Post-Punk, Minimal Wave, Industrial, Disco Dub, EBM and proto-House / early-House. “Mutant Beat Dance.” is an epic journey into a classic American ideology that had its apex in Chicago.

This aesthetic has already proven influential on many artists across the globe. Least of which is the Grammy winning LCD Soundsystem whose members Tyler Pope and Patrick Mahoney back Melvin on vocals here on the Martin Hannett and Howard Devoto inspired “Feed The Enemy” – a cut that shows how wide and deep this epic record goes. Another LCD member Gavin Rayna Russom also provides vocals on the later cut “Geometrical Disease.” That these collaborations are included here should come as no surprise to anyone who caught the recent LCD tour – Traxx was the opening DJ on that nationwide tour. You can check out his opening set from Chicago last November at the link below.

Traxx has been working on this concept in various forms throughout the last decade on release for Discos Capablanca, Rong Music, Hour House Is Your Rush Records, L.I.E.S. (Long Island Electrical Systems), Light Sounds Dark, Rush Hour and his own Nation label finally refining his concept into its most thoroughly developed explored on this the debut M.B.D album that was started in 2015.

Mutant Beat Dance was originally a duo made up of Traxx, and self-described weirdo, Chicagoan Beau Wanzer. Given the scope of the new project it became logical and necessary to expand the unit to include its newest member Brooklyn based Steve Summers.

Together this hard-working trio has completed an album with an enormous diversity of song styles unlike anything they have ever done before. Unique in its musical range and content from obscure electronics with subliminal messages to funk laden machine grooves, industrial soundscapes, Detroit dirge, cryptic ankle bitter anthems and beyond this is a genre-bending challenging epic of an album.

This player previews the next addition to RH’s reissue series; a split release, by Les Choc Stars and Teknokrat’s. Heat in two flavors! Check out the Zaïrian electronic dance floor banger “Nakombe Nga” and the dope, unheard Belgium new beat version on the flip… Co-curated with renowned record fiend John Gomez. Release: Fall 2018

The music on this winning double-sider was written by Tony Baron and Gery François, two Belgian producers that were involved in several musical projects on the New Beat scene in the 1980s. They worked under many aliases and recorded the Teknokrat’s haunting “What Did She Say?” at the famous Studio Madeleine in Brussels in 1989. Prompted by Jean Martin from Espera Records, Baron adapted the music into a further two songs to be released that year, Virginity’s melancholic “The Key”, and the surprising but ear catching collaboration with the label’s soukous stars, Ben Nyamabo’s Les Choc Stars Du Zaire. It is still a mystery how the seeds were planted for the one-off pairing that culminated in the electronic soukous bomb “Nakombe Nga”. What is certain is that it is set to light up dancefloors worldwide.
